Therapeutic Plasma Exchange

A specialized treatment process that separates blood components using different technology and equipment than hemodialysis. While there are numerous variations of how this may be performed depending on the patients’ underlying disease and the therapeutic objectives, the process of removing blood from the body and returning it to the patient share many of the basic skills of dialysis nursing. The procedure is performed by SMG nurses who are specially trained in this modality. As with hemodialysis, CRRT, and SLEDD vascular access is required and can be provided as noted above.
